On Sunday, October 4th, more than 200 attendees came out to participate in RSVP’s 4th annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk “Run For the Health of It” event. Aetna, the event sponsor, hosted the Run and Walk at their scenic Blue Bell Corporate Campus site.
Overall fastest male was Sam Brooks of Blue Bell with a time of 18:32, and fastest female was Christy Totten of Perkasie with a time of 18:57. Age-categories enabled participants as young as 8 and as old as 70+ to compete among their peers and receive recognition for their efforts. Multi-generational families raced, walked and enjoyed a great day together.
Attendees were entertained and informed by interactive “healthy living” stations. Starbucks offered free coffee to fuel the fun. Healthy snacks kept everyone satisfied and happy. The Wissahickon H.S. Jazz Ensemble played toe-tapping tunes familiar and popular to all. The students at North Montco Technical Career Center made home-baked cookies as a special treat and the Elmwood Park Zoo showcased some of their softer animals for the public to see. And Harpy Carpy, Felix D. Helix and Daffy Dave, RSVP volunteer clowns, spread smiles across the faces of the young and young at heart with their silly antics and balloon pumpkins.
Staci Jaffe, of Aetna Retirees Market states “as part of Aetna’s Community Outreach and Commitment, Aetna takes great pride in sponsoring “Run For the Health of It” and partnering with RSVP of Montgomery County.
This event is one of the many ways that Aetna Medicare Plans has fulfilled their pledge in educating and reaching out to the Medicare-eligible population. In the ‘Spirit of Volunteerism,’ Aetna Medicare Plans sales and marketing staff was pleased to sponsor and team with RSVP volunteers to host this fun day.”
RSVP of Montgomery County is dedicated to promoting volunteerism among area residents age 55 and older. Over 1,300 area volunteers currently assist more than 300 regional non-profit organizations with varied tasks. In addition, a comprehensive menu of twelve programs offers every volunteer an exciting opportunity to utilize their talents and experiences to meet critical community needs.
